Athletes in Education

In 1962, the Ministry of Education created the Pakistan Sports Board. This fact is ironic in the face that few Pakistani stars are educated. Their lack of education is part of the reason children are failing at school. These ‘heroes’ do not promote education by their own lack of it.

Sport’s heroes are role models. Young aspiring athletes look to these ‘heroes’ and idolize everything about them, including their lack of education. Young boys; especially, look at the stars’ wealth and prestige and believe that they accomplished all of this without a good education. For example, the cricketers today, between the whole lot of them, only hold 2 degrees; Mishbhaul Haq has an MBA and Faward Aalam has a Bachelor’s of Commerce. All other players have no more than Intermediate. A Category A player will make 312,000 Rupees per month. Now that is a nice wage for a non-degree holder!

Many a young boy in Pakistan aspires for the big leagues; they dream of someday joining the ranks of their favourite cricket hero. They spend hours at the game while neglecting their studies. They look to the wealth and prestige of these players, knowing that most have only an elementary level of education, and believe that they don’t need get good grades. They think they don’t have to work hard and get good marks at school. After all, these sports athletes have made it big; they have money, they have girls, they have prestige. And they did it all without an education. So who needs an education? What does it matter if young boys fail their classes? These young men think they can have the same future as their favourite hero without an education.

This kind of thinking is very short-sighted and flawed. There are several good reasons why everyone, even the most talented young person should earn a college or university degree.

1) Only 1% makes it to the Top of the Sports World

That means that if there are 1000 athletes striving for the pros, only 10 might make it; that means that you will most likely be in the 990 who will not become a sports star and must look elsewhere for a career. If you are one of the 990, then you need a college or university education to make a good future for yourself.

2) Injuries

Injuries happen. Even if you make it to the professional leagues, you can easily fall and injure yourself early or late in your sports career. An injury can be a life changing event that prevents you from going back on the field. You may never play again so what will you do? Having a good education means you have something you can use instead of your sports ability. It is your safety net for an illustrious career outside of sports. An injury can end your cricket career but it cannot stop your career as a (e.g.:) business administrator.

How Education Can Help Your Game

1) Improving your technique and skill comes from practice. That means you need a disciplined life and habits. If you can discipline your mind to study; then you have what it takes to have discipline in the sport you love and practice it to your fullest and beyond.

2) A good athlete must be a student of the strategies of the game. A well-disciplined graduate has acquired the necessary thinking skills necessary to transfer these same skills to the game and come out a winner for himself and his team.

3) Ability to cope with the tactical complexities of the sport. Poor performance on the playing field has been equated with a lack of education that prevents the athlete from being able to cope and understand the complexities of the modern game. Jan Molby, a footballer and quad-linguist believes that British footballers do not spend enough time in the classroom and that is one good reason why England is not doing well on the playing field.

So if you really are into sports, continue on playing the game; give the very best you have towards your sport, but don’t forget your education. Become disciplined; start a good study program, get plenty of rest, get those good grades, decide now to enter university.

If you are among that 1% that does make it to the big leagues and you also have a degree; then so much the better. The horizons are open to you, the sky is the limit even after retirement, and you are prepared to start a second career.

Education in 50 Years: A Futurist’s Perspective

Education is an important tool that is applied in the contemporary world to succeed. The word education means ‘to bring up’. Education provides the basic knowledge that makes a human a human. Since the start of human history people have been learning and educating. People in the past struggled very much to get education. Education has progressed from that time. In the present time only educated people can get success in the world. Without education success is impossible.

Education helps an individual to live a respectful life. Educated people are more helpful in the progress of a country. It is playing an important role in the economic and social prosperity. Career wise, education is the foundation of developing individuals by providing knowledge regarding humanity all over the world. Individuals in the society acquire new approaches in life that build opinions on the economical and social life. Education enables the society to interpret the world around them rightly, innovating to new ways and means that conform to their environment.

Contrary to the ways of getting education in the past, now a day’s getting education is easy. New technologies, books and many other things have made it easy to get education.

According to my perspective education in the future will be even much advanced than the past and present. With the advancement of science and technology education in the future will be very wonder full. The internet is playing an important role in getting education and it will be of great help in the future. In the future everything will be connected with the internet. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers and everything today that is helping in getting education will be much more upgraded. In the next 50 years we will be able to open any book while sitting at home with just a gesture of hand. Instead of LCDs or screens everything will be projected in front of us with the help of holographic technology. Even the children’s of 1-3 years of age which are not able to go to school will learn many new things with this technology at home.

Like there are always two faces of a picture, one is bright while other is dark in the same way there are two ways the education in next fifty years can go. Education in the next fifty years may become very easy because everything will be in a student’s reach while sitting at home. There will be no need to carry big and heavy bags to school and colleges. And because of the advancement in science and technology all the lessons and lectures will be provided online. But there may arise many problems due to this. Students will become very lazy and inactive and many problems will surround them due to their inactivity. They will get everything while sitting at home which will distort their health.

The education in next 50 years may become a little difficult for students because new ideas and discovery’s are being made and students are forced to study all that in a very little age so it becomes a burden on them to understand everything but it will be beneficial for them because for getting something you have to lose something. In the whole world, there are many countries which include developed and developing countries. The education system after 50 years will be different in both. It will be really good in developed countries but in developing countries it will not be that much advances because the countries are way back in the field of science and technology. In next fifty years system of education in school, colleges and universities will totally be changed. Studies will become very easy. Science and technology will play an important role in future education but it will not reduce the importance of teacher. A teacher is the main guide in the whole life of a student. He guides them and makes them well disciplined and educated and in the future also teacher will play an important role in the career building of a student. Even if the students will be able to get knowledge from advance resources like internet, still they will need a teacher. Teachers will educate them in school, colleges and universities in a proper way. The role of a teacher in the life a student can’t be neglected.

A teacher is also considered as a “spiritual father” of a student. A student can learn all the knowledge of the world but he can’t understand it without the aid of a teacher. Without a teacher, students will get distracted and get involved in other activities. They will become manner less and their interest for seeking education will die out. The advance technology will also help teacher to convey his teachings in a better way to the students. There is a golden saying:-

“Get knowledge from a child’s cradle till grave”

Role of a teacher in the life of a student in the next fifty years will remain the same as it is in present. As education makes a student well-mannered and well-disciplined so a student of future will also be well mannered and disciplined. He will respect his elders and his teachers. He will follow the right path.

In next fifty years the life of a student will also be changed completely. Now a day, students have a very tough routine. They go to school in morning, from school to tuition and again have to study at home. Their whole day is spent in this routine and they don’t have time for themselves. In future the students will not have to do that much hard work because it is bad for their health and education means to bring up not to bring down. In present days the illiteracy rate is very high. Many children in many countries of the world do not go to school but in future all this would be changed and every child will get education because getting education is the right of every one. System of education in the next fifty years will also be improved as compared to today.

In short, whatever the configuration of an education of future might be technology will play an important role in it. With technology teachers will also play an important role in educating the students. If all the teachers are well educated then they will play a better role and with the coordination of a teacher and new technology the students of future will be the best and they will take their nation or country to the peaks of progress.

Education, Meaning, Aim and Function

The process of defining the meaning of Education is to problematize its lexicology and re-conceptualize it. An example is illustrated from real day-life. A multinational company involved in the making of advanced pharmaceutical products decides to get rid of its wastes in a cheaper manner rather then waste-treat them. They dump the wastes around the coast of a poorer African continent based on the company’s policy of maximum profits. Are the board of directors in the company educated? They are, one can assume for rhetorical comfort. An illiterate, native-tribe living in the rainforest jungles of Papua New Guinea doesn’t know the meaning of Environmental jargon: ‘Reduce, Recycle & Reuse’; yet, they conserve and sustain the environment, based on the level of skills known to them. Are the people of the rainforest uneducated just because they are illiterate?

The problems connected with narrowness of meaning called Education emerge within the contextuality of the above mentioned examples, and the conceptual difficulties involved in attempting to centre meaning upon Education is by all means complicated. So the meaning of education has to emerge from this narrowness to the broadness of meaning. In its broadness of meaning Education is the process of ‘stimulating’ the ‘person’ with Experiences, Language and Ideology, beginning from the time of birth and continuing till the time of death. This meaning of Education would give rise to the Aim, as disseminating formally, non-formally, culturally, nationally, scientifically and ritually-skills, literacy, knowledge, norm and values, as pedagogies of the institutions giving rise to the aim. This aim would be directly related to the perpetuation of that Society as an ideological structure. Aim would again determine the Function of Education The function of Education would be thus related to how meaning and aims are synchronized into processes called experience of application. The thesis statement of this paper is developed on three levels-one, the meaning of education as the stimulation of person a with language, experiences and ideology-two, aim of education being dissemination and perpetuation, and three, function, as synchronized processing.

The development of the Meaning of Education as a stimulation of a person from birth to death with language, experiences and ideology makes the person, a Being of the process as an Ontology. This process starts right from birth as affective language, for example, a mother’s cooing, to a process where the person becomes a cognitive structure, as I-the speaking subject or ego-subject. Here, the individual undergoes the norms, traditions of the society’s culture and learns to adapt and appropriate the symbolic codes of the society. Along with this process, the individual also learns to formalize his or her adaptation and appropriation to a literacy process i.e. developing skills and competencies. Thus we find that the Meaning of Education to be multi-leveled as well as multiple -oriented, through both formalist and non-formalist institutions of society. The formalist institutions which procreate the Meaning of Education are the Schools, the Government, Law and Order etc. Other formalist institutions like family, religion and native-traditions can work both openly as well as silently to orient an individual to the meaning of experience as the educated. For example a mother’s oral transmission of a folk song to the daughter is silent whereas a marriage function is a more open aspect as the performance of a culture’s pedagogy. Thus language and experiences generate the codes for that society to experience the Meaning of Education, making possible for ideologies to exist.

Thus the meaning of Education would give rise to the Aim, as disseminating formally, non-formally, culturally, nationally, scientifically and ritually-skills, literacy, knowledge, norms and values as pedagogies. Dissemination would mean the spreading of the Society’s cultural norms and values. It would also mean the spreading of Nationalism as democratic-pluralism, multiculturalism, diversity and celebration or its reverse as intolerance, authoritarianism through pedagogies; it is also the development of systematized pedagogies- promoted as theoretical and applied within the Society’s Scientific and Technocratic institutions.

The Aim of Education would be directly related to the perpetuation of that Society as an ideological structure. The contemporariness of perpetuation would answer the questions related to the aim of Education being: empowerment, sustainability, preservation, minimization, conflict resolution, creativity and innovation.

The Aim of Education as well as the Meaning of Education give rise to the Function of Education as meaning, that is the synchronized processing of Aim and Function into a materialist, operational process. Synchronization of the Meaning and Aim of education takes places at various levels action. They are Making, Transmission and Implementation and Cultural-Simulation. At the Making level, the Function of Education is connected with ‘Policy Formulation’ related to the Meaning and Aim of Education. Policy Formulation can reflect on multiple issues like development, sustainability, scientific progress, promotion of rights, dignity and culture, energy management, disaster management, peace and conflict resolution. Once policies are made they are transmitted and implemented through the society’s institutional structures like the legal system, the education system, the society’s welfare management etc. Cultural-simulation takes place both formally and non -formally as society’s religious, cultural and familial institutions. They perform many social and cultural roles within the home as well celebration or mourning for an occasion.

To conclude, it is pertinent to summarize the thesis developed that is, the Meaning of Education has been broadened to involve the stimulation of a Person, with Language, Experiences and Ideology. The Meaning of Education becomes vital to the Aim of Education as dissemination and perpetuation. The Meaning and Aim of Education becomes synchronized into the Function of education as Making, Transmission and Participation.
